01City Overview

What Bengaluru is like

Bengaluru sits 920 metres above sea level, which is part of why its weather is so famous. It is also the city that built India's space programme and hosts the world's largest tech campuses. People here still make time for a filter coffee and a Saturday morning run around Cubbon Park.

"Bengaluru doesn't ask where you're from. It asks what you're building."

A city of 13.6 million people that somehow manages to feel personal. Whether you land in Whitefield for a tech posting, Indiranagar for the café culture, or Jayanagar for schools and green streets, Bengaluru makes room for you. The old city and the new city coexist without friction, which is rare, and the weather makes every season liveable in a way no other Indian metro can claim.

02Culture & Festivals

Theatre, music and festivals

Bengaluru has a far bigger cultural life than its tech name suggests. It has active theatres, classical music, literary festivals, and festivals that bring the whole city out onto the streets.

Dasara (Mysore-Bengaluru)
Karnataka's grandest festival, the Mysore Dasara is two hours away, drawing millions. In Bengaluru itself, the 10-day festival is marked by cultural programmes, illuminated government buildings, and families visiting the city's parks and temples. The Vidhana Soudha illuminations are spectacular.
October-November
Diwali
The festival of lights is celebrated across communities with fervour. Residential areas light up with diyas and decorative lights, sweets are exchanged between neighbours, and the market streets around Commercial Street and Jayanagar 4th Block throng with shoppers. Fireworks (moderated) in gated communities.
March-April
Ugadi (Kannada New Year)
The Kannada-Telugu-Marathi new year is among Bengaluru's most important cultural moments. Homes are decorated with mango leaves and rangoli, the Ugadi pachadi (a mix of six tastes) is made and shared, and cultural programmes run across the city. A wonderful time to experience local tradition as a newcomer.
January & August
Lalbagh Flower Show
Twice yearly at Lalbagh Botanical Garden, Republic Day (January) and Independence Day (August). The 240-acre garden's famous Glass House is the centrepiece, with elaborate floral arrangements and botanical exhibitions attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors. A quintessential Bengaluru experience.

03Climate

Weather through the year

At 920 metres above sea level, Bengaluru is India's coolest major city. It rarely gets hotter than 35°C, and winter nights average about 16°C. More than anything else, this weather is why the city keeps growing.

Winter
NOVEMBER · FEBRUARY
Bengaluru's finest season, clear skies, warm, dry days (about 27 to 31°C), and cool evenings (12 to 16°C) that sometimes require a light jacket. This is when outdoor life peaks: mornings at Cubbon Park, weekends in Nandi Hills, al fresco dining. December and January are the most pleasant months in any Indian city.
Pack a light jacket, evenings reach 12°C in December
Best time for Nandi Hills sunrise drives
January Lalbagh Flower Show is worth catching
Summer
MARCH · MAY
Bengaluru's summer is mild by Indian standards, April peaks at 31 to 35°C, which feels warm but never the brutal 45°C of Delhi or the sticky humid heat of Mumbai. Pre-monsoon thunderstorms from April add drama but also provide relief. A summer in Bengaluru is entirely liveable, no need to escape the city as in other metros.
April is the hottest, keep hydrated during outdoor activities
Pre-monsoon storms (April-May) are spectacular but brief
Stay indoors 12-4pm on the hottest days
Monsoon
JUNE · OCTOBER
Bengaluru receives around 1,080mm of annual rainfall, mostly June through September, with a second pulse in October-November (northeast monsoon). The city looks beautiful in the monsoon with everything greening up, but certain low-lying areas flood. Traffic becomes significantly worse in heavy rain. Carry an umbrella September-November.
Check Bellandur, Varthur, and Silk Board flood-prone zones before renting
Keep rain jacket/umbrella in your bag June-November
Traffic doubles during heavy rain: use metro where possible
