Food, drink and going out

Bengaluru runs on filter coffee, IPL cricket and a quiet belief that it is building the future. Life here is cosmopolitan but not showy. You can eat at a Michelin-quality Japanese restaurant one night and at an 80-year-old Udupi mess for ₹80 the next, and both feel normal.

Where Bengalureans eat
Brahmin's Coffee Bar, Basavanagudi
The most famous filter coffee and idli stop in the city. Open from 6:30am. Queue expected. Absolutely worth it, this is Bengaluru's best breakfast address, and regulars will fiercely defend it.
MTR (Mavalli Tiffin Room), Lalbagh Road
Founded in 1924. The original Rava idli was invented here. Weekend breakfast queues are legendary and part of the experience. The gold standard of traditional Karnataka food.
Koshy's, St. Mark's Road
Bengaluru's most storied all-day café, journalists, writers, and old families have been meeting here since 1940. Anglo-Indian menu, Raj-era atmosphere, affordable prices. A one-of-a-kind institution.
Toit Brewpub, Indiranagar
India's most famous microbrewery. Craft beers brewed in-house, wood-fired pizzas, and a terrace that fills up by 7pm Friday. The anchor of Bengaluru's craft beer revolution that now has 60+ breweries.
Social, Koramangala & Indiranagar
The definitive young professional hangout, co-working café by day, bar and food space by evening. Multiple locations. It shows how modern Bengaluru mixes work and social life.
CTR (Shri Sagar), Malleshwaram
Home of the legendary benne (butter) masala dosa, crisp, ghee-laden, and worth the inevitable queue on Margosa Road. A century-old Malleshwaram institution that locals will insist is the city's single best dosa. Cash only, mornings best.
Cultural nuances for newcomers
Kannada matters
Learning even 10 words of Kannada · nanage Kannada gotilla (I don't know Kannada), dhanyavaadagalu (thank you), is appreciated and opens doors. Locals notice and remember.
Traffic is not negotiable
Bengaluru's traffic is among the worst in the world by multiple indices. This isn't an exaggeration. Plan your home around your office, not the other way around. Every veteran will tell you this.
Pub culture
Bengaluru has India's most relaxed drinking culture. Most pubs close at 11pm (midnight on certain days). The microbrewery scene is excellent, Arbor, Toit, The Beer Co., Windmills Craftworks.
Society WhatsApp groups
Your apartment society's WhatsApp group is a genuine community tool here, power cuts, water schedules, delivery alerts, and neighbourhood watch. Join on Day 1 and turn on notifications.
Water situation
Cauvery water supply + borewells + tankers is the triad. Gated communities manage this well; standalone buildings less so. Ask explicitly about water supply before signing. Tanker dependency = extra cost.
Bengaluru time
Events start 30 minutes late. Dinner is 8 to 10pm. The city's rhythm is later than most Indian metros, which suits night-owl tech professionals but can take adjustment for families used to earlier schedules.

02Local Guide

Kannada words that help

Kannada is the state language, and locals notice and appreciate any attempt to speak it. Bengaluru also has its own slang, which mixes Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi.

ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ
Greeting
Namaskara
Hello / formal greeting. Using this instead of “namaste” instantly marks you as someone who has made an effort, warmly received in shops, buildings, and with auto drivers.
ಧನ್ಯವಾದಗಳು
Thanks
Dhanyavaadagalu
Thank you (formal); “dhanyavaada” is the casual version. Using either earns you a smile, most non-Kannadigas never bother to learn it, and locals appreciate those who do.
ಹೇಗಿದ್ದೀರಾ?
Question
Hege idira?
“How are you?” One of the most useful everyday openers, and a quick way to warm up a conversation with neighbours and shopkeepers.
ಹೌದು
Reply
Howdu
“Yes, correct.” Heard constantly, the Kannada equivalent of a conversational “yes, exactly”.
ಬೀದಿ
Navigation
Beedi
“Street / lane.” Essential for navigation, Bengaluru's address system uses both Kannada and English, and knowing “beedi” helps with auto drivers who prefer Kannada.
ಮುಖ್ಯರಸ್ತೆ
Navigation
Mukhyarosthe
“Main Road.” Pairs with “beedi” to describe almost any address; useful shorthand when directing a driver to the bigger arterial road first.
ನಿಮ್ಮ ಹೆಸರೇನು?
Society
Nimma hesaru yenu?
“What is your name?” Learning this gets an extremely warm reaction, auto drivers and shop owners in older parts of the city often speak limited Hindi or English, and the Kannada question breaks the ice completely.
ಸಾಕು
Everyday
Saaku
“Enough!” Used expressively to mean “I've had enough” or “that's too much”, you'll hear it in traffic, in queues, and increasingly mixed into English by Bengalureans of all backgrounds.

03Weekend Escapes

Weekend trips

Its height and its place in central Karnataka make Bengaluru India's best-connected city for weekend trips. Hills, coast, historic sites and wildlife are all within reach. Leave on Friday evening and you can be somewhere special by Saturday morning.

How far

Four escapes by the hours this guide gives from Bengaluru. Tap one to read about it.

Over 5 hours, none in this guide

Nandi Hills, 1.5 hrs; Coorg (Kodagu), 4-5 hrs; Mysuru (Mysore), 3 hrs; Goa, 1 hr.
    1.5 hrs by road
    Nandi Hills
Bengaluru's most beloved sunrise destination, a hill fort rising to 1,478m with views across three states on clear days. The drive up through coffee-estate country in the early morning is a ritual for many Bengalureans. Tipu Sultan's summer retreat, Bhoga Nandeeshwara temple, paragliding and mountain cycling give you plenty to do beyond the view. Best visited October-March.
    Best Oct-Mar
    4-5 hrs by road
    Coorg (Kodagu)
Karnataka's most beautiful hill district, coffee and spice estates, misty mornings, and a culture unlike anywhere else in India. The Kodava community's traditions, Abbey Falls, Talakaveri (source of the Kaveri), and exceptional homestays make this a perennial favourite. The drive through Madikeri passes some of India's most scenic coffee country. Monsoon adds waterfalls but roads can be challenging.
    Coffee country
    3 hrs by road
    Mysuru (Mysore)
The former royal capital of the Wadiyar kingdom, the Mysore Palace illuminated on Sunday evenings is one of the most spectacular sights in India. Chamundi Hills, Brindavan Gardens, the silk weaving co-operatives, and excellent Mysore pak (the original sweet) make this an essential weekend. Dasara (September-October) transforms the whole city into a festival.
    Royal heritage
1 hr by air / 8 hrs by road
    Goa
The definitive Bengaluru weekend escape, particularly October through February. Air India and IndiGo both fly multiple daily from KIA. South Goa beaches (Palolem, Agonda, Cola) are preferred by Bengaluru's tech crowd for the quieter, more boutique vibe. The road trip through Goa's NH-66 coast is also well-travelled, passing through Mangaluru for excellent seafood en route.
